How abdominoplasty works

Four stages — from the initial assessment to the follow-up check. You’ll know in advance how the preparation, surgery, and recovery unfold.

  1. 1

    Preliminary assessment by the doctor

Send photos and describe the changes you’d like. The doctor will assess your anatomy and the possible scope of correction. An online consultation with the doctor is also available.

  2. 2

    Consultation and preparation in Istanbul

Before surgery, you’ll have an in-person consultation with the doctor and the necessary preoperative workup — its scope depends on the type of surgery and anesthesia.

    Preparation and tests

Before your trip, the coordinator will send a short list: which medications to stop in advance, what to bring, and how to prepare for the flight.

In Istanbul, before surgery, you’ll have blood tests, an ECG, and a consultation with the anesthesiologist. The doctor examines your abdomen, and together you agree on the surgical plan. If the tests suggest it’s better to postpone, you’ll know in advance.

  3. 3

    Surgery

Abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately 2–2.5 hours — the duration depends on the scope of the surgery, whether it is combined with liposuction, and individual factors. After surgery, the patient stays one night in the clinic under medical supervision.

    During the surgery

The doctor removes excess skin and fatty tissue and tightens the abdominal wall muscles. In cases of rectus abdominis separation, the main goal is to restore the integrity of the muscle framework.

The incision is planned so that the scar — a fine line — stays hidden under regular underwear. If there are scars on the abdomen from previous surgeries, they can be removed during the procedure.

Abdominoplasty can be combined with liposuction. The doctor will tell you whether you need it after an examination.

  4. 4

    Recovery

After a night in the clinic, recovery continues at the hotel, with the assistants staying in touch with you. On day 7, the doctor performs a follow-up check; compression garments are worn for up to 1.5 months after surgery.

    Recovery day by day
    0

After surgery — a night in the clinic under medical supervision. The first days can be challenging — but with the recommendations followed, recovery goes fairly comfortably.

    1

Examination before discharge and transfer to the hotel.

    2–6

Recovery at the hotel, compression garments, and following the doctor’s recommendations.

    7

The final check before you leave. By this point any drains that were placed have already been removed, dressings have been changed and stitches taken out. The doctor makes sure that healing is going normally and there are no signs of complications.

    1.5 mo

Compression garments are worn for up to 1.5 months — they support proper healing and the formation of a neat scar.

Risks and contraindicationsPatient safety is the priority at every stage. Before the procedure, the doctor assesses the patient’s health.

Risks

Like any surgical procedure, abdominoplasty carries potential risks, including bleeding, infection, swelling, temporary changes in sensation, asymmetry, and other individual reactions. How a scar will form cannot be predicted precisely in advance: it depends on age, genetics, immune health, tension at the wound edges, and blood flow. If needed, the scar can be refined with laser resurfacing, medication, or excision. Potential risks are discussed with the patient before surgery.

Contraindications

Acute illnesses and inflammatory conditions, blood clotting disorders, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and certain chronic conditions may be grounds for postponing surgery or doing further testing. If a pregnancy is planned in the future, surgery is usually recommended to be delayed. The decision on whether surgery can be performed is made by the doctors after assessing the patient’s health.

What’s included in your treatment

The medical part only. The doctor will quote the cost once he has seen your photos.

Not a weight-loss method

Abdominoplasty removes excess skin and tissue and restores the abdominal muscles, but it is not intended for weight loss. When needed, it is combined with liposuction.

Questions and answers

Ask a question →
How much does the surgery cost?

The cost is calculated individually. The doctor provides it after reviewing your photos. Send them on WhatsApp — you’ll receive a plan and the full price.

Will the scars be visible?

There is always a scar, but it is placed so that it stays hidden under regular underwear as a thin line. Its length and position depend on the extent of the correction.

When can I return to work and sports?

Timing is individual and depends on how your recovery goes. The doctor will give you personal recommendations at the follow-up check and will stay in touch with you after you return home.

Can it be combined with liposuction?

Yes, abdominoplasty can be performed together with liposuction. Whether you need it in your case is something the doctor will tell you after an examination.

Can I have the surgery if I’m planning a pregnancy?

Surgery is recommended if no further pregnancy is planned: a new pregnancy can stretch the abdominal skin and muscles again. Discuss your plans with the doctor during your consultation.

How many days do I need to be in Istanbul?

For surgeries under general anesthesia we recommend 7–8 days in Istanbul — from arrival to the follow-up check; under local anesthesia, 2–3 days. The coordinator will agree exact dates with you after the doctor’s preliminary assessment.

When can I fly home?

After the follow-up check on day 7. The doctor clears you to go home once he’s confident your recovery is on track.
