How blepharoplasty works

Four stages — from the initial assessment to the follow-up check. You’ll know in advance how the preparation, surgery, and recovery unfold.

  1. 1

    Preliminary assessment by the doctor

Send photos and describe the changes you’d like. The doctor will assess your anatomy and the possible scope of correction. An online consultation with the doctor is also available.

  2. 2

    Consultation and preparation in Istanbul

Before surgery, you’ll have an in-person consultation with the doctor and the necessary preoperative workup — its scope depends on the type of surgery and anesthesia.

    Preparation and tests

During the consultation, the doctor assesses the structure of the eye, the skin and tissues of the eyelids, the position of the brows, and the presence of fat pockets. Together you decide which area needs correction — the upper eyelids, the lower ones, or both at once.

Before surgery, a pre-operative evaluation and lab tests are carried out at the clinic. Let the doctor know in advance about any chronic conditions, medications you take, and past surgeries — this helps plan the procedure safely.

  3. 3

    Surgery

Blepharoplasty is usually performed under local anesthesia. Surgery on the upper or lower eyelids takes about an hour on average; the total time depends on the extent of the work and whether both areas are corrected at once. No hospital stay is needed — after surgery you return to your hotel.

    During the surgery

The upper and lower eyelids can be addressed separately or together. The surgery is tailored to the individual structure of the eye, eyelids, and skin.

    Upper eyelids

The surgeon makes an incision along the natural contours of the eyelid and, if needed, removes excess skin and fat tissue or redistributes it. The process usually takes about an hour.

    Lower eyelids

The doctor removes or redistributes excess fat tissue and tightens loose skin, and in cases of eyelid sagging works with both the skin and the muscle. On average, the surgery takes 40–60 min.

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty can be performed not only for aesthetic but also for medical reasons: ptosis, eyelid deformity after burns or injuries, congenital anomalies of the eyelid structure, and cases where overhanging skin narrows the field of vision. In addition to lower eyelid correction, chemical peels, laser skin resurfacing, or fillers may be used.

  4. 4

    Recovery

Recovery takes place at your hotel, and the assistants stay in touch with you. Before you leave, the doctor performs a follow-up check — 2–3 days in Istanbul are enough.

Swelling, bruising and mild discomfort are a common part of early recovery. Recovery at the hotel while following the doctor’s recommendations.

The doctor’s follow-up check before you leave, and recommendations for the period after you return home.

    Beyond that

Swelling and bruising gradually subside, and full healing takes several weeks — it is important to keep following the doctor’s instructions. Scheduled photo check-ins let the doctor follow how your recovery is progressing.

Risks and contraindicationsPatient safety is the priority at every stage. Before the procedure, the doctor assesses the patient’s health.

Risks

Like any surgical procedure, blepharoplasty carries possible risks, including bleeding, infection, swelling, bruising, asymmetry, variations in scar healing, and other individual reactions. In some cases, an additional correction may be needed. The possible risks are discussed with the patient before surgery.

Contraindications

Acute illnesses and inflammatory conditions, blood clotting disorders, pregnancy, breastfeeding, certain eye conditions, and chronic diseases may be reasons to postpone the surgery or require further evaluation. The decision about whether surgery is possible is made by the doctors after assessing the patient’s state of health.

What’s included in your treatment

The medical part only. The doctor will quote the cost once he has seen your photos.

Vision is not affected

The surgery is performed on the skin and the layer beneath the eyelid — the organs of vision are not involved, and blepharoplasty does not affect the clarity of your sight.

Questions and answers

Ask a question →
How much does the surgery cost?

The cost is calculated individually. The doctor provides it after reviewing your photos. Send them on WhatsApp — you’ll receive a plan and the full price.

When will the swelling go down?

Swelling and bruising after blepharoplasty are an expected response. The early recovery period usually lasts about 2 weeks, and full healing takes several weeks.

Will the scars be visible?

The incision on the upper eyelid is made along the natural contours of the eyelid. The doctor will explain at your consultation how the incisions will be placed in your case and how they heal.

When can I return to work and sports?

Timing is individual and depends on how your recovery goes. The doctor will give you personal recommendations at the follow-up check and will stay in touch with you after you return home.

Can the upper and lower eyelids be done at the same time?

Yes, the upper and lower eyelids can be addressed separately or together. The decision is made at the consultation, taking into account your wishes and the condition of the tissues.

How many days do I need to be in Istanbul?

For this surgery under local anesthesia, 2–3 days in Istanbul are enough — no hospital stay is needed. The coordinator will agree exact dates with you after the doctor’s preliminary assessment.

When can I fly home?

After the follow-up check — 2–3 days after surgery. The doctor clears you to go home once he’s confident your recovery is on track.
